By the time I went to a private GP and was referred to a Prof Rangananthan I was in daily pain from sciatica radiating down both legs to my feet. I had endured this for 18 months but it had become progressively worse and I was taking too many pain killers and it was becoming very hard to work, commute and keep fit ( I am in my early sixties). Immediately after my first consultation, I had a detailed MRI scan and went back for a follow up appointment the following week. Prof. Rangananthan showed me the scan of my spine revealing a huge facet joint cyst which was incontrovertibly causing the problem. He explained the only solution was keyhole spinal surgery to free up the pressure on my sciatic nerve and create more room. He was not in any way alarmist but was clear on the risks of rupture. We arranged surgery, early the following week. He was very responsible in setting out the risks of spinal surgery for me and also offered to call my husband and explain this to him too. It was rightly a sobering experience but I felt reassured and that I was in very skilled hands ( given my GP Jack Edmonds advice and recommendation and the website and social media information). I had the surgery early in the morning at the Princess Grace Hospital. It was a three and a half hour operation. When I came round from the anaesthetic I wiggled my feet and realised the sciatic pain had gone, what a relief, I was sore and stiff and woozy from the drugs but the sciatic beast was vanished! I had bed rest flat on my back for 24 hours and wonderful nursing care from the lovely night staff. A physio helped me get up and walk a little and the following day returned so we could check I was OK on stairs which I was. Prof Rangananthan has a very helpful specialist spinal nurse who answered many trivial questions with great care and professionalism and indeed has followed up by phone several times since I have been discharged. I went for my follow up appointment yesterday and all is well - I walked from the tube station with no discomfort and I return in a few weeks and hope then to be referred to physio and my PT with tennis again by Easter. I feel as if I have my life back and am just so grateful to Prof.Rangananthan, such a skilled and caring Surgeon, I was so lucky I was referred to him.

I was treated with amazing patience and respect, I was given as much time as needed to have really in depth explanation of need for my surgery and was amazing to have access to many testimonials sharing past successes of similar conditions, this really helped me to come to my decision in opting to go ahead. However, most of all his in depth knowledge and experience for embracing new techniques using Key hole surgery was for me the big difference to other consultants I had come across, he is the future believing in less invasive ways to operate than old fashioned open surgery I had been recommended prior. I am not recovering and being treated with after care and again so far amazing service levels. Plus, I must comment on the location and hospital used for my operation, as cannot speak highly enough of the Hospital, THE PRINCESS GRACE, near Baker Street Tube, Marylebone, Central London, facilities and staff a perfect 10 !

I had a bad fall and it resulted in pain when I lay in bed and then developed into intense pain in my left leg when I walked. The pain got worse and worse. I saw one othopaedic surgeon who diagnosed an existing condition and recommended physio therapy. However the pain got so bad I was almost immobile. I then saw Professor Ranganathan. He immediately diagnosed the problem as a slipped disc in my lower back . I eventually had a discectomy and decompression. The result was miraculous. I was immediately without pain when in bed and the next day when I tried walking it was as if I had never had a problem. The speed with which I recovered amazed my family. Throughout the time I was in Mr Ranganathan’s care he was supportive, clear in explaining all my options and warm and professional. In fact fantastic.

I went from being in incredible pain, unable to stand or sit for longer than 1 minute and fear of it being the new normal to walking out of the hospital a day after surgery. Dr. Raganathan was thoughtful, answered my million and one questions, and allowed me to make the decision with his supportive information. He did not delay needlessly and is the reason I am back to being productive. As a surgeon I would recommend no other. I've had physiotherapists comment that I must not have had the surgery I had because of how small the incision was. My scar is straight and almost could be called beautiful. It's a year later and I am still so very thankful for his skill.
